Resume Tips

It takes only a few seconds for an employer to size up a resume. An excellent resume should be a well-organized and easy-to-read. Two page resumes are recommended.

Both the cover letter and resume should be typeset. Neatness and accuracy are very important. Make sure you proofread your resume and cover letter. Better yet, ask someone else to proofread them.

Begin the cover letter with a statement identifying the position you are applying for and the intent of your letter. (For example: Please consider me for a position in your Bilingual Customer Service Department.)

Secondly, be sure to make reference to your French/English skills and your previous job/education experience.

End the letter with a positive statement and indicate that you are prepared to meet for an interview at the employer’s convenience.

The Basics:

  • Use short, to-the-point sentences.
  • Lay out your job titles/ headings in boldface type.
  • Use action verbs to start each sentence (for example: designed, organized, built, developed, coordinated, earned, analyzed, established).
  • Describe part-time jobs, community volunteer work and professional awards that show off your expertise, enthusiasm by providing examples of measurable results.

The Mechanics:

Have your resume printed on 8 ½" by 11", good quality, white, neutral-toned or light gray paper.
